Host cells subdivide nutrient niches into discrete biogeographical microhabitats. The authors show that a commensal Escherichia coli strain and a pathogenic Salmonella enterica isolate both utilize nitrate for intestinal growth, but each accesses this resource in a distinct biogeographical niche.
